Cancer Survivor Helps Commuters Make Peace with Traffic
Om the Road—Monday, March 10, 2008
Pioneering yoga teacher, Jen Swain, Creative Director of Om the Road, LLC, can give drivers a yoga lesson while they sit in gridlock. Her CD, "Yoga in the Car with Jen Swain: Bumper to Bumper," consists of basic breathing and movement exercises that will reduce stress, increase energy and awareness, and provide a sense of calm to millions of drivers battling traffic every day.
The 2007 Urban Mobility Report from the Texas Transportation Institute released the following statistics.
• 110 million Americans commute to work each day
• The average commuter spends 38 hours per year in traffic
• In Los Angeles, that number almost doubles to 72 hours per year
• In Washington, D.C., Atlanta and San Francisco it’s 60 hours per year
in traffic.
The report has garnered national interest, as both ABC News and MSNBC featured the findings on recent broadcasts. Road rage is on the rise as are traffic-related fatalities, often caused by drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
Swain, who also is also co-Founder of the Los Angeles based multimedia yoga company, recognized the need to help drivers take back their commute. "Americans are stressed," says Swain, a certified Yoga Instructor who trained at the acclaimed Nosara Institute in Costa Rica, "and we're taking it out on each other. We need to learn how to defuse ourselves, and
STOP BEEPING, START BREATHING."
Swain knows about maintaining calm in stressful situations. She was diagnosed with Hodgkins- Lymphoma, a cancer she believes is stress related, and like too many Americans, had no health insurance. She credits her yoga practice not only as a key contributor to her recovery, but also with strengthening her resolve, patience, and serenity during the experience.
Swain also notes that there are health considerations as well. “Sitting in traffic can cause our muscles to tighten and our breath to constrict, and the flow of blood and oxygen can be impaired. ‘Bumper to Bumper’ addresses both the physical and emotional needs of those with long, slow commutes.”
Addressing safety concerns Swain says, “This CD is meant to be done while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic (or on the subway or at your desk). It's not about zoning out behind the wheel,” she emphasizes. “It’s about rejuvenation, unlocking energy and restoring physical well-being.”
The CD has received interesting press and a host of consumer accolades which can be accessed on the website at www.omtheroadyoga.com. Bumper to Bumper was also named “Best of Show” at the 2007 California Gift Show by New Age Retailer, a leading trade publication in the mind-body-spirit world.
“We are a culture that sits,” Swain continues. “We sit in our cars or on the metro line, we sit at our desks, we sit on the couch. It’s time to turn sitting into a healthy choice. It’s time to turn yoga into something anyone can do, anytime, anywhere.”
